Maki Kita (Makiko Kita)
is a Japanese Artist, Pacifist, Peace campaigner who grew up in the ancient capital of Japan, Nara - surrounded by a unique blend of cultural heritage and natural wonders.
She has lived most of her adult life in the UK (Oxford, London, Liverpool, Cardiff) & Berlin.
Since she relocated to Wales, her practice deepened her connection to nature and allowed the elements connected to her surroundings to shape her work.
Through her cross-cultural experiences and backgrounds in fine art, architecture & sociology, Maki pursues her ongoing interest with travelling, journey, movement, encountering, connecting, life’s in-between spaces and the traversing and questioning of its boundaries.
Themes of freedom, creating poetic space in everyday life, being part of nature, engaging with community & promoting social inclusion through art are important elements in Maki’s work.
She values the role of cultural / artistic activism in bringing about social awareness & positive change.
She practices a broad range of media including painting, drawing, writing, collecting, stitching, mapping, filming, photography and other forms of art. But in recent years, art creating using clay (ceramics), the printing method, collecting stories, languages and colours from nature, and running workshops at the local community increasingly became the most vital part of her work.
Her work has been shown at Liverpool Biennial Festival of Contemporary Art (The Salon Show), Galerie F92, Brixton Art Gallery, Lethaby Gallery, Swiss Cottage Central Library, The Cardiff Story Museum, Bridge Pottery Gallery, Art Market Cardiff, Menier Chocolate Factory and Agnès b (Covent Garden / Notting Hill). Also, her films have been screened at House of World Cultures (Haus der Kulturen der Welt) as part of Berlinale Film Festival, Public Life & The Lux Centre in London.
While studying sociology, politics, community design & planning at the department of Social Science & Architecture in Waseda University in Tokyo, Maki worked as a theatre actress and as a radio DJ specialising in world music at College Radio Japan.
In the UK she studied art history, literature and language at St Ann’s College & Kellogg College (Rewley House) in Oxford University, and studied fine art at Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design in London.
She received a national license to practice museum curation in Japan after attending the museum curator course at Kyoto University of The Arts.
She was awarded The Lowes Dickinson Award 2003-2004 & Film Maker of the future Award 1998 at The Lux Cinema in London.
北 真基子 | Makiko Kita
英国 - ウェールズ在住の芸術作家。オックスフォード大学留学後、早稲田大学、セントラル・セント・マーチンズ美術大学を卒業。芸術作家として欧州を拠点に活動。
「国境」「境界」「自由」などをテーマに、リバプール・ビエナーレ、ベルリン国際映画祭、フランスのファッションデザイナー、アニエス・ベーのロンドン店舗 ( コベント・ガーデン & ノッティング・ヒル店) 、ベルリンの世界文化の家、スイスコテージ図書館、旧チョコレート工場や地域に根差したカフェやレコード・ショップ、ラジオ局などで、様々な媒体を使って作品を発信。また、レコード・ジャケットやポスター、雑誌や本の表紙、イラストや写真、カフェ、コーヒーバッグのデザインなども手掛ける。
現在は、ロンドンからベルリン、そして、ウェールズへと移り住み、これを機に、各地の「風習」「歌」「踊り」「口承文芸」「祭り」などを通して、その地で生まれた独特の「文化」や「言語」、また、その源となる「自然」との「共生」について、英国のウェールズやコーンウォール、スコットランド、モロッコ、スイス、ポルトガル、スウェーデン、ノルウェー、デンマーク、また、幼少期を過ごした古都 奈良などでフィールド・レコーディングを兼ねて「音の記憶」「言葉の記憶」「色の記憶」を辿るリサーチを行う。
近年は、アートを通して、人と人が '関われる場' を増やし、「社会的包摂機能」を重視した包容力のあるスペースを築くこと。また、「毎日の生活の中に詩的な空間を作ること」や、安心して様々な違いを楽しめる、繋がり場としての 「コミュニティー・ビルディング機能」を促進することに力を入れており、２０２４年、様々な文化、言語、歴史、環境、背景などを、共に学び、独自性を大切にしながら、自然の一部として、どの様に、共に歩いていくのかを、アートを通して模索するプロジェクト 'Walk Together' を立ち上げる。このプロジェクトの一環として、学校やギャラリー 、医療機関、アートトレイル（町中の店やバプ、学校などの公共の施設や自宅などがアートの為に解放されたイベント）などで、木の枝などを筆として使用し、全身を使って、躍るように、線を描く 'Make Your Mark' というワークショップを展開。
２０２０年 - ２０２２年
世界中で感染症が猛威を振るう中、自由に移動する事が出来ない、また、長年の海外生活の中で、国境を越え、自国に帰国する事が叶わないという経験を、生まれて初めてする。ウェールズの自宅からの移動が 5マイル (8 km) までと規制されたロックダウン期間中、外の世界との繋がりを求め、毎日、空を夢見て、ウェールズの自宅の庭で、飛ぶ練習をし、毎日、海を夢見て、こちらも、自宅のキッチンで、海辺に転がる石のコレクション「旅する石」の創作を、粘土を使って開始する。
２０２４年『 Walk Together / 一緒に歩く 』という同じタイトルの２つの個展を開催。夏は、南ウェールズのガワー半島にて、「旅する石」の作品群を中心とした陶器の作品を、秋は、首都-カーディフにて、新しく描き下ろした３００枚の版画の作品群を発表。
２０２５年、言語とアートの 「青 - 空と大地の間の色 プロジェクト/ AO - the Color Between Sky and Earth Project 」をスタートさせる。 日本語とマオリ語とウェールズ語を柱に、琉球諸語、アイヌ語、ハワイ語、サンスクリット語、マレー語、ラテン語、英語、ギリシャ語、アラビア語など、言語のルーツ、相互関係、その土地が保有している色や土、海や風が繋ぐ人の移動、また、布に紐に織り込まれた物語など、「言葉の記憶」「土地の記憶」「音の記憶」などのリサーチ継続しながら、作品の制作を開始する。
また、「ウェールズ & 日本 2025」の一環として、
第二次世界大戦終結 80周年の節目にあたるこの年に、
ウェールズの平和寺院 (Temple of Peace)にて、広島の被爆樹木のイチョウの木の種から育った苗木を、地元のコミュニティーと一緒に植樹し、その活動を機に、様々なロケーションで、ワークショップを催し、世界平和を願う作品の制作を地域のコミュニティーと連帯して取り組み始め、２０２６年のエキシビションとシンポジウムの開催に向けての準備を進めている。
